Monoxious Outfit post Gridlocked-1

It was Restaurant Week in Singapore last week and it was a great opportunity to head to some fancy restaurant to test out their menu. Along the way, I realised that the building matched my hair and decided to take some photos there. :D

Monoxious Outfit post Gridlocked-3

The lattice design on this dress is so nice I had to get it and it makes a great statement LBD for a nice night out.

Monoxious Outfit post Gridlocked-4

On my way out, one of the waiters commented that my hair looks like Rainbow Paddle pop and I was like, “EXACTLY!!” I’m glad someone else thought of it this way and I really need to get a picture of me eating a Rainbow Paddle pop Ice cream before the colour fades.

Lust List: Zara Summer 2013 Collection

Dear Zara, shut up and take my money.

Laid a trap for myself last Friday when I insisted on going to Zara while Venetia and I were out shopping. Now I want everything in that collection. zara summer 2013 picks

From the skirt shorts skorts to shoes, the Zara 2013 Summer collection is one of my favorite from them so far. If I could wear clothing from only one store this season, it would have to be Zara.

I walked out of the store pretty pleased about scoring that mini shopper bag (S$69.90) in black and a strappy bralette top(S$79.90)  in their campaign video which I can’t seem to find a picture anywhere else except for the picture that I tweeted on Friday. Now to find an occasion to wear them out and get some outfit shots soon!

I don’t think ‘shame’ suffices to describe how I feel upon discovering Leake St. a couple weeks back – it lies literally across the road from my apartment and I have been living here for nearly a whole year. It’s a disused road/tunnel that has since been transformed into an authorised graffiti area, and I am not exaggerating when I say that it is a constantly changing landscape: there is always someone spraying and painting, and a piece never stays on the wall for longer than a week before it’s covered over by something new. I do think it’s worth a visit if you are in London, especially with it being a 1 minute walk away from Westminster Abbey and the London Eye.

Plus this tunnel leads to an awesome Thai eatery so that gets it an A+ in my books.

Wearing NARS semi-matte lipstick in Transeurope Express – it’s a very flattering deep rose in real life, and the pictures make it slightly more saturated than they really are!

Most of the time, the fashion blogger is nothing without her photographer and I thank the universe for a boyfriend that loves me enough to oblige to braving the ridiculous midday sun just so that I can get some photos for the blog. Let’s not forget fellow fashion blogger, Venetia who is always up for squeezing in an outfit shoot whenever we go out.

That and my mum who agreed to alter this Zara top in record time just so that I can wear it out. I can’t believe it only exists in size S, it totally requires a size XS too.

I have also taken to putting on some lip colour with much coaxing from Dawn. I totally see her point about how some colour on the lips totally brightens up the face. I’m wearing some OCC Lip tar in “Stalker”, it looks much darker in the tube or maybe it’s just really bright out when I was wearing it.

In case this post isn’t obvious enough, I am absolutely obsessed with cropped tops and you know how things go down with Dawn and I; once we are obsessed with something, we end up buying multiples of it.

That is the story of how I ended up with two more cropped tops from ASOS.

The UNIF Garter Skirt had been lying in my closet for quite some time and I wasn’t able to find a nice cropped top to go with it but now that summer is approaching, there are more cropped tops available online! I love the corset details and the fan-shaped lacing reminds me so much of medical corsets. It’s a little hard to sit down cause there are some bonings in the front which gets in the way.

I am also sporting TEAL HAIR now! I never really thought teal was my colour but the green undertones from my last hair colour will give it a turquoise colour when the teal fades out!

In case why anyone is wondering WHY my hair isn’t frizzy and fried after all that colouring and bleaching, it’s all thanks to Hairloom’s O3 treatment ($95 for all hair-length!!!!). Prior to the treatment, my hair was tangled even at my length and it was hard to dry my hair properly for fear of breakage. The treatment really saved it and the effects are pretty long-lasting as well. They are giving away a free O3 hair treatment when you colour your hair with them from now until 30 June 2013!

Why is there a picture of an affrogato? No idea. It was something new at a cafe I go to every now and then. They need to change the coffee though, it’s too acidic and makes everything taste sour.

In case you are also wondering why I have a Darth Vader mask on, that’s cause these pictures were taken on May the Fourth aka Star Wars Day! (May the Fourth be with you, geddit geddit?) It was the one day in the year where I could wear this mask and feel relevant but honestly, Darth Vader is always relevant.

This reminds me of the time I was still playing SWTOR and there was a guild named “Sith Happens” and I would get a kick out of funny guild names. (Mine was Rogue Vogue Squadron. We pose…. a threat!)

After what is possibly the lengthiest winter in the history of recent memory, good weather has finally decided to grace us. I think I am getting too accustomed to the climate here though – it’s only 19℃ here and I am already sweating like Tyra Banks wearing a fat suit in July. May lord God and also Jesus save my soul when the height of summer actually arrives. I think I will be surviving on a steady diet of soda and ice cream.

I have noticed that I talk about the weather practically in every post. I can’t decide if I am turning British, or if the weather is truly the most interesting aspect of my appallingly boring life. Now that school’s out, all my days are spent watching marathons of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Speaking of Dawn, I badgered her into giving me this cropped top from ASOS cause they were out of my size and I convinced her that she can’t really wear it in London anyway (their definition of “heat wave” is like 27°C or something). Cropped tops are fast becoming my wardrobe staple in this hot weather.

Roman sandals are making a comeback with these Alexander Wang inspired heels. They’re not the most comfortable shoes but damn, they’re pretty. I am also wearing these Zara skorts that have been featured to death by every fashion blogger and their moms. They’re comfortable and goes with the rest of my wardrobe so sue me for being mainstream.

Here’s also a last look at my peacock hair. As you can probably tell in this picture, all the bleaching has taken a toll on my ends and it is time to say goodbye to coloured hair.

Since we are on the topic of hair, let’s talk about mine too! Just kidding – this post is so overdue that I am just clinging on to whatever excuse I can to make it marginally more acceptable. If you have been following my instagram (shameless plug: @propatriamori!), you’d probably have realised that I’ve gone back to a most boring shade of black months ago. I’d love to maintain bright hair, but as it is even the toughest of black dyes washes out of my hair within a month. I think I am doomed to have a half-assed shade of brown forever.

no more blues

I’d also like to take this chance to plug one of the favourite products I have discovered lately – the Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Icon simply doesn’t come off unless you want it to! It applies as a liquid (not unlike a less sticky lipgloss), and dries matte (give me matte or give me death: I abhor glossy lips). The liquid form requires a certain amount of precision, so I only reach for it when I feeling fancy.

I’m not sure how many of you are excited when it comes to clearing your wardrobe. The OCD bit of me loves it and it is quite cathartic to make some space in the wardrobe (for new stuff!!) and hope that the pieces would go to people who will love it even more than I did!

Underground Market started really haphazardly; with the first one put together in a matter of days and it became a gathering of sorts where we purge our wardrobes and say “hi” to our readers.

We are doing this for the third time this July. Mark your calendars for 27th July cause shit just got serious. We have 3 new additions to our little family and all of them have a shop of their own. Linda’s going to be bringing her wares from Yesah as well!

I’m really, really starting to miss the first days of summer. I don’t understand this country’s obsession with sun – we get 30℃ for one day and you see people tanning in bikinis in the middle of Covent Garden. I just want to slather myself in SPF 60 sunscreen and hide indoors in the aircon forever. Guess you can never take the fear of heat out of a Singaporean!

Really though. When you go to a ski resort and see a punch of peeling red lobsters who doesn’t believe in sunscreen, there’s about an 87.5% chance that they are British. I guess they got to make up for the lack of sun somehow.

I know my Hunter wellies are barely visible here but it is seriously one of the best purchases I’ve made this year (a close contender would be pizza). If you follow me on Instagram (plug plug plug: @propatriamori) you might have seen that I attended my first festival this year!! These wellies carried me across rain, mud, spilled beer, urine, and assorted fecal matter all the way to Slipknot, Iron Maiden, and Rammstein. They are brillant for snow, great for hiking, riding, and general lazing in the park next to urban deers.

Has it been two months? Maldives seemed so far away and it makes me crave for another short getaway.

My daily ritual on the tiny resort we stayed in consisted of waking up to the sun shining into our room, getting breakfast, lounging around until lunch, getting ourselves fat at lunch, drinking at the bar during sunset and then getting dinner. Rinse, repeat. Most nights, it was slightly cloudy but the boyfriend woke me up at 4am to look at stars cause the sky cleared up. It was 5 full days of doing nothing; the best kind of holiday ever. No itinerary, no schedule to stick to and certainly no rushing. monoxious sun worship-1edit

Blood is the new Black

$

I don’t need to be a psychic to know that when it comes to Autumn, Oxblood is always the new black. I think this is one of the main reasons why autumn is my favourite season – you get to be as vampy and gothic as you want and still be in fashion. Win-win!

It’s true what they say about the Cambridge Satchel: you simply don’t become satisfied with just having one. I bought a neon pink 14″ satchel a few months ago for spring and while I love it in all its neon, retina-burning (quite literally) glory, I wanted something more subtle and understated too. I’ve been wanting one in oxblood since the beginning, but it only became part of their permanent range a few months ago. I happened to wander into their store in Covent Garden whilst out with a friend and was filled with a wild surge of impulse to own it. Since it is 13″ as well as being a different colour, I suppose I can justify it…

cambridge satchel oxblood

cambridge satchel oxblood 2

Quick note on size: I was googling to hell and back when I was choosing a satchel for the first time, so hopefully this would be helpful to anyone who can’t compare their sizes in real life. The 14″ can easily accommodate A4 sized sheets of paper – magazines are not an issue as well, but it is not however possible to squeeze in a 13″ MacBook Pro. Perhaps mine is still stiff from not being used that much, but the most I can manage is my 11″ MacBook Air sans sleeve and that is already pushing the boundaries of a comfortable fit.

The 13″ is brilliant for A4 and magazines can fit in without an issue as well. I haven’t have the chance yet to really test what it can fit, though. As it is, both satchels are rather narrow in width and I find myself having to pare down the contents of my bag significantly in order for me to fit what I need into them. It’s like playing Tetris every single time I bring either of them out.

Mix & Match

HEY HEY! So I’m back in Singapore! It doesn’t matter how long I’ve been away from home – once I plonk my ass on the couch in front of the TV, it’s really as if I’ve never left. It has been an interesting summer. I visited two places I’ve never been to before (Berlin & Göteborg), but unfortunately no pictures until I manage to extricate them from my now-defunct hard drive.

I packed surprisingly lean for this trip. Half of my suitcase was filled with things for friends and family and the other half with T-shirts and sweat shorts. There’s even a pair of trainers (!!!) which I ambitiously thought I’d put to use somehow. Seeing my pot belly below though, maybe I should really go out for a run or two.

Manage to get this dress from Topshop on sale. I absolutely abhor sale shopping. It’s not that I’m too snooty to score a discount. It’s just that whenever there is a “sale” sign anywhere in the shop, it seems to bring out the animalistic instinct in shoppers. Everyone assumes that they have free reign to throw whatever they want on the ground and rearrange whole sections entirely. I think I would have an easier time sorting through the belongings of a hoarder, than to find anything I want during a sale. Sale shopping is like a timed challenge to me: how many items can I find that I like before my patience and my sanity begin to frizzle?

My eyeliner even matched my bag that day – I had a pink eyeliner (maybelline hyper glossy liner in hot pink) on over my usual liner.

Face it

Sometimes I like to pretend that I am a beauty blogger, despite being the worst at skincare and having the most boring makeup regime ever. What can however be said about me though is that I rarely ever venture out of my den without a full face of makeup… Surely that should count as some dedication, right? Having the same routine also means that I can apply a full face in under 15 mins, and under any circumstances: in the passenger seat of a car, on a bumpy plane ride, in a café…nowhere is sacred to me when it comes to applying makeup.

Anyway, it has been over 4 years since we’ve started this blog. So what better way to commemorate it than to draw up a timeline of my looks? Maybe a fashion timeline will come later, but right now I find it funnier to focus on the various makeup disasters I’ve had over time.

2009

Perhaps it was individuality. Perhaps it was a streak of rebellion. Perhaps it was a way of expressing freedom at finally being free to bleach my hair during my school holidays. Regardless, nothing can explain why I thought having brassy box-dyed hair was a good idea. More mystifying, however, is the fact that I kept at it for 3 years.

Makeup wise, it has never occurred to an 18 year-old me that there was such things as too much eyeliner or too much mascara. Or as a matter of fact, too much of anything – I am sure that if I smiled too widely, my makeup would actually crack and flake off like dried plaster. Fake eyelashes were an everyday affair, an affair that would continue well over the next 4 years.

2010

This picture was taken off this blog itself. After having a fringe for ages, I’ve finally decided to grow it out. What didn’t stop, however, was my obsession with light hair. To exacerbate things, I was a baller on a budget. Meaning that I soon became very experimental with boxed dyes. It’s no mystery that my hair eventually took on the texture of dried summer hay.

Having a fringe for years meant that I have never paid much attention to my eyebrows before. Not knowing how to deal with this sudden exposure, they went from ungroomed pastures to over-shaven lines on my face. Eyebrows at this point were basically arbitrary to me. I’m not even sure if I had eyebrow pencils then. They may well have been filled with whatever eyeshadow I had handy.

Screen Shot 2013-09-15 at 20.12.06

2011

I wasn’t sure what happened, but something in me snapped and I finally decided to go back to my natural hair colour. I have a feeling it has got something to do with an especially unfortunate incident with boxed bleach, leaving me with black roots and bright orange hair. I have probably decided to wipe that debacle off my memory, and off it shall remain.

My eyebrows were starting to get a little more attention now that black hair forced me to create more contrast on my face. I have always been insecure about my lips however, so lipsticks were a huge no for me still.

163222_494184373844_7955431_n

2012

I guess you can say that I became too focused on my eyebrows. At the rate they were expanding, I might have well drawn a unibrow ala Frida Kahlo. I decided that bolder is better, and that meant filling in my brows with a black eyebrow pencil. Disregard the fact that my hair isn’t even black to begin with. I had brows that would make my mum back in the 80′s proud.

I did however discover lipsticks during this period though, and soon amassed a pretty impressive collection of them.

558295_10150647442278845_544082204_n

2013

Decided to experiment with ombré hair despite being several years overdue. Found a staple look, one that I’m still wearing this very day! My brows have come a long way since I’ve started wearing makeup, and I think I’ve finally found a look that works. A classic (albeit boring) combination of bold brows, winged eyeliner and bold lips.

Oh well, we will see how long this phase last!!

What are your hair and makeup disasters of the past?

Rouge Orage

It feels good to come back after a long leave of absence – I’d like to blame it on the fact that my hard drive became irretrievably corrupted (thus taking ALL of my pictures with them. I’m seriously looking into cloud storage), but I’d be lying if laziness did not play a part in my radio silence. Chances are that you might have noticed a few (i.e. complete) changes we’ve made on the site. A few nifty widgets have been added, notably an interactive Instagram widget to the right. Click on either to visit Arissa’s and my Instagram pages, where there’s probably more frequent updates!

Third and last year in Uni has proven to be really tough: between planning my thesis and attending school, there hasn’t really been time for taking outfit pictures. I find the process of editing pictures extremely cathartic though, so you might just see more updates while I’m busy procrastinating finishing school work.

Anyway, I’ve discovered that the easiest way to look polished is to simply reach for a dark lipstick. Chanel’s Rouge Orage is a constant favourite. It’s deep without being dramatic, and the formula is easy to apply without worrying about uneven outlines.

Remember what I said in the last post about losing all the contents of my hard drive? Guess what – I found 3 pictures on my desktop (which is actually a 15″ MacBook Pro, but I call it the desktop for the sake of convenience)! Sometimes it pays to be disorganised.

These pictures were taken some time ago in Canary Wharf. I’m not going to tell you how long ago because it has been an embarrassingly long time since they have been sitting in a little unmarked folder.

In any case, I love this outfit and would wear it all the time. Unfortunately it calls for very specific occasions to be worn: a date at a fancy bar, a cool house party, and that time where you really needed next month’s pay advanced from your boss.
