Outfit Post: Work-In-Progress

It was a Saturday that I had to work but no complains since it was a pretty productive day with Leona and we scored some sweet accessories from Mandy Wu (more on that in another post). Haji Lane was swarmed with hipsters and street photographers people with DSLRs as usual, I hate to say this but I was part of the population lugging a huge camera around, taking pictures of my coffee.

This chain mail necklace reminds me of an abandoned DIY project. Chain mail accessories are tough to make and I wonder if I’ll ever get around to finishing that DIY project.

A disturbing amount of my shopping is done while I’m lying in bed at 3am trying to fall asleep. Usually, I wake up the next day with little to no recollection of the experience, except for a vague sense of regret. This harness was purchased under similar circumstances – I had no idea where I was going to wear it or what I was going to wear it with, but it looked so good on Tumblr that I just had to have it!

I do think that it will look great over a white top too. A quick browse through the closet confirmed that I don’t have one, so it looks like there would be more 3am shopping sprees in store for me!

I just handed in my dissertation!!! Now comes the question of what do I do with life now that school is over, but I am going to leave that thought until next week. For now, it’s just mindless relaxation after the mad rush that was submissions! Wearing my new All Saints Manu leather jacket out into the beautiful spring weather. When the sun comes out in London, productivity decreases about ten fold… battersea mnx 3 battersea mnx battersea mnx 2

I’ve always loved the structure and silhouette of Haider Ackermann’s garments. I was not convinced about how great it would look on a regular person cause everything looks good on a model and this skepticism was lingering when I picked up this Haider Ackermann vest at the Club 21 sale last year.  It was the only black one left and I was half-hearted about this purchase as there were no mirrors around but thank goodness Venetia insisted that I buy it.

I’m also in love with the Nichole harness from Mandy Wu. The best bit about her harnesses is that you can layer them together to make them look better. I guess this means I have to start a mini collection of harnesses from her now.

I have never associated cherry blossoms with London, so it was a pleasant surprise to see them in full bloom everywhere this spring! The petals do make the prettiest mess on the ground.

I’m not sure how many of you have been to Primark, but for those who haven’t, just imagine this: a massive emporium filled with all assortments of cheap clothing you can imagine, with absolutely no discernible pattern whatsoever. You may find something you like but the item in your size would be halfway across the shop floor underneath a pile of clothing discarded by a previous shopper. Hence I always feel a vague sense of victory when I actually find something I like in my size there (which is not very often at all). This dress (worn as a top) was one such find – everyone seemed surprised to learn that it’s from Primark! I can’t blame them because it is hard to imagine that anything nice can emerge from such a hell hole.

Untitled cherry

My Fjällräven Greenland jacket isn’t what I would typically consider a ‘fashionable’ item, but fashion be damned in this instance – it is honestly the most comfortable and practical jacket I own. It can be raining and freezing outside and it wouldn’t matter one bit when I have this jacket on. It was the perfect accompaniment for my impromptu trip up to rainy Edinburgh (more on that later!) last week.

Z35B5560

I can’t decide if my hair falls under ‘artfully tousled’ or ‘caught in gale force winds’. I tried an updo because my usual hair is so boring, but all it did was to remind me that I have absolutely no skills in this department.

Make-Up Tutorial: Winged Eyeliner + Red Lips

0
0

Some people have asked us how we usually do our make-up and since Audi Fashion Festival is tomorrow, we thought you might need some help tying your look together with a classic winged eyeliner and strong lips.

AFF-tutorial-9

AFF-tutorial-1

Bare face gah! Always prep your skin before putting on make-up. I’m using the In Transit Camera Close-Up from This Works. This product is an all-in-one mask, moisturiser and primer. I’m quite particular about ingredients and I’m glad that this primer doesn’t contain any parabens, mineral oil, synthetic fragrances and sulphates. Just smooth it on your skin, wait for a few minutes for it to be absorbed before putting on foundation.

AFF-tutorial-2

For the foundation, I am using the Edward Bess Black Sea Complexion Correcting Mousse Foundation. The texture is light and fluffy but it gives ample coverage for my blemishes, spots and the redness around my nose.

AFF-tutorial-3

I can’t believe that just a few months ago, I thought it would be okay to go out without drawing my eyebrows. I couldn’t be more wrong.

AFF-tutorial-4

Girls, this is the difference between polished and unkempt. Always draw your brows.

AFF-tutorial-5

I’m going with something a little lighter on the eye shadow so that the eyeliner would be more obvious. Apply a mid-tone brown all over the lids and then blend in a darker shade where I have marked in the above picture. Then, using a highlighter shade, apply liberally on the brow bone and start blending downwards.

AFF-tutorial-6

As for the eyeliner, I work with a liquid one for a more precise line. Draw a line along the lash line and flick upwards towards the end. Create a little ‘V’ and join that line to the corner of your eye. Don’t worry if it looks weird right now, it’s just an outline. Slowly fill it in with your eyeliner and you’ve got yourself a dramatic winged eyeliner! Don’t forget to draw your lower lash line as well.

AFF-tutorial-7

Apply 2-3 coats of mascara on your upper and lower lashes and then apply blush. I forgot to take photos of this step but I’m using the ZOEVA Luxe Colour Blush in Rush Rush for a lovely rose coral colour.

AFF-tutorial-8

Optional: If you prefer the Korean gradient lips, lightly pat the colour on starting from the inside.

AFF-tutorial-9

I’m using one of the most gorgeous red from DuWop called Chop Styxx. The DuWop Lip Venom feels minty when applied so I guess that’s where the lip plumping effect comes in. It goes off after a while so don’t be too alarmed by it.

There are of course more steps involved in a full make up look. For example, I left out contouring and highlighting as that would most likely be another tutorial in itself but do let us know if you are interested!

So there you have it! A classic winged eyeliner and red lippie look!

Travel Diary: Edinburgh, Scotland

It was a bank holiday weekend a while back, and there is no better way to celebrate the completion of my dissertation than to have a small getaway! This was very much a last minute decision – and I mean it in all sense of the word. We decided on a location at 10am, and by 2pm we were at the station ready to board the train. While there is a certain romance in impromptu trips, I am not sure if I am ready to embark on another journey on such short notice again. There were much angst to be had when we tried to secure accommodations through Airbnb on whatever spotty signal we could get in the English countryside: it was only after repeated rejections (due to the last minute nature of the booking) that we finally managed to find someone that would relent to leasing out a room to us.

We arrived at Waverly station after a good 5 hours on the train. I honestly don’t mind long train rides, as long as there are comfortable seats and electrical outlets (and the absence of annoying passengers). The first night was rather uneventful, with a short walk along the Leith before heading to Chez Pierre for dinner – pictures are in absentia so you will just have to take my word that I gorged myself on a fat lobster that night! My boyfriend was recovering from food poisoning that weekend and couldn’t keep much down, but I am horrendously lacking in sympathy when food is involved.

Majority of the second day was devoted to a visit to a Whiskey distillery. There were strict rules against picture taking, but I think it is well worth the 30-mins bus ride out of Edinburgh for a short tour. Second half of the day went towards climbing Arthur’s Seat in Holyrood park, a rather ambitious undertaking considering our boozy breakfast. I’m not going to lie and say that it was an effortless climb – it took us the better part of two hours to walk up the 251 metres. The resulting view makes the strenuous journey worth it, though. (It is a little hard to see in this resolution, but the tiny specks on the upper edge of the cliff are fellow hikers).

I am a firm believer of dressing appropriately for the occasion… When a wedding invite states the dress code as Black Tie Optional, it would be vastly inappropriate to show up in jeans and t-shirt; similarly, it would be equally ridiculous to wear heels to go on a hike. It’s always a constant struggle of mine to find outfits that are both functional and chic.

edinburgh 4

Sorry for marring the landscape. And don’t let the road in the previous picture fool you… the only way up to the top is via rudimentary natural trails carved out by years of use. There are places where you need to get on your hands and feet to climb. Passed by this ruin on the way back to town as well – I simply love how well history has been preserved in Edinburgh.

edinburgh 5

On the recommendation of many locals, we headed to the gastropub The Dogs on our way back. Difficult to secure a reservation on most days, and straight out impossible on weekends. Fortunately they had a cancellation and we managed to snag a spot after heading home and cleaning up. The Dogs is so kitschy it’s amazing. Dog-themed decorations just…everywhere. Unfortunately pictures of the food turned out looking less appetising than they actually were, so I am not doing to do them the disservice of putting it up. Pigeon breasts (pink in the middle!) for starters, with braised ox cheeks in chocolate sauce for him, and rabbit brandy casserole for me. Unless they invent satisfactory meat substitutes, I will never have the willpower to commit to being a vegetarian…

Sale Post: Dresses & Jackets

This is part I of a series of sale posts to follow – I came to the realisation a few days ago that my closet has reached critical mass, and a few things have just got to go. It’s a pity because I still love every piece I put up, but my reclusive lifestyle simply doesn’t justify having so many going-out dresses! Figured that whatever I can get for them could go towards something more productive…like fillers or botox so I don’t have to spend half a day photoshopping out my under eye circles from my pictures.

Anyway, if you see anything you like or have any inquiries, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment here or email me at dawn@monoxious.com! Also feel free to contact me via Facebook or Twitter or even snail mail as well if you so desire.

ALL SAINTS ORISSA DRESS ON HOLD

all saints 2

all saints dress

£28

Brand new without tags, never worn. Gorgeous dress with a mesh yoke and iridescent taffeta from All Saints. Looks black in natural lighting, but shines a rich burgundy brown in the sunlight. Original purchase price was over £100, but I’m just looking to pass it on to someone who would wear it! Would best fit someone a UK4/UK6. I’m around 35″  in my bottom and found it a little tight in that area.

RIVER ISLAND CUTOUT DRESS  SOLD

RI dress 2

RI dress

£18

Jersey River Island dress with geometric beading and mesh detailing. Worn once. Bought it thinking that it would be perfect for nights out in town, but it suffices to say that nights out in town simply isn’t something that crops up on my agenda very often. Looking to go to someone who is less of a social recluse than I am, which shouldn’t be difficult. UK 8 but fits comfortably on my UK6-ish frame.

FEIST HEIST LUNA DRESS SOLD

FH dress 2

FH dress 1

£15

Worn once. Modeled beautifully on the original site in white. Pictures truly cannot capture the intricacies in this dress. So much details have went into it to ensure a flattering fit. Princess darts in the back creates a form-fitting silhouette and the mesh overlay lends a more casual and sporty feel to a classic dress. Size 1 on FeistHeist’s site, which should roughly correspond to a UK6-8.

TOPSHOP BIKER JACKET  ON HOLD

topshop jacket 2

topshop jacket 1

£20

Lightly worn, made of faux leather with detachable faux fur collar (picture in link). Lovely cropped style with stitching all around the sleeves and back. Extremely versatile and it’s definitely one of the jackets I use more often. I am saving up for a real leather jacket though, and I predict that this wouldn’t get very much use then. Seriously, I’d buy it if I were you.

H&M x Maison Martin Margiela

HM MMM 2

HM MMM 1

£25

Brand new without tags. Remember how everyone nearly trampled over one another to get this collection when it launched? Yeah I was one of those people. But here’s a brand new jacket, all yours minus the hour long queues. A structural, typically Margiela-esque blazer with tons of stitching details. A really lovely item that unfortunately get no wear unless I find myself an internship.  UK size 8 if my memory is to be trusted.

SHIPPING

All items will be shipped registered and tracked from London via Royal Mail. There is a flat rate of £5 for orders within the EU and £8 for orders outside the EU.

PAYMENT

All purchases are final and non-refundable. I would highly prefer payment through PayPal.

Happy shopping! xx

Still not over my All Saints Hoxton Monument Jacket. (They call it a “coat” online, but the material is way too thin for anything chillier than a spring breeze). I can wear a potato sack underneath, button the jacket up (as can be seen here), and instantly look presentable for a michelin star restaurant date. Not that I have michelin star restaurant dates or potato sacks, but a girl can dream.

Got two sets of these stacking rings at a Mango sale earlier. I have never actually paid much attention to Mango before, but I was actually pretty impressed by their accessories selection! I felt that they went well with my simple gold choker from H&M, but I think I’m one of those people who don’t actually mind mixing metals – a whole armful of gold bracelets and rings would seem too much of an overkill for me!

Remember when I said that I will never embark on an impromptu trip again? I don’t know what makes me think that I am qualified to dish out advice when I don’t even follow my own guidance. A frenzied search for tickets and a mad dash towards the airport later (ticketing machine at the train station refused to recognise my card – I had to badger a poor, unsuspecting stranger into helping me purchase it), we were on our way towards Göteborg, Sweden.

While summer usually evokes the idea of romantic strolls along the French Rivera or cocktails by the Mediterranean sea, I have never been a beach-and-bikini sort of person. Seaside towns and beaches have just always came off as odiously commercialised to me, having spent several vacations in Thailand, Bali, and Australia. Away from the throngs of tourists and vendors usually found in the former locations however, the isolated, raw, rocky coastline of Hönö in norra skärgården was a welcomed relief. It was still too early in the season and the water was too frigid to even really dip your feet in, but there was just something incredibly serene about being alone (with the exception of the occasional asshole seagulls that deigned to screech your way) in unspoiled nature.

It wasn’t easy to get there – had I not have a local driver (thanks, J.!), I probably would never had made my way out there myself. You have to first drive to the port (about 20 minutes from the city centre itself), and board the ferry towards the island. It is entirely possible to undertake the whole journey by public transport, but I honestly wouldn’t have the patience nor the dedication to visit the archipelago without the convenience of a car.

In many ways, Gothenburg’s landscape reminds me a lot of Singapore’s Keppel Bay area… A harbour’s still a harbour, regardless of where in the world it is.

A recent discussion with a friend reinforced my belief that I simply cannot tolerate living anywhere too far inland – I am by no means a beach person, but I do love being close to the sea (regardless of the fact that Singapore’s waters are so polluted that I seriously doubt its ability to sustain life). There’s just something invigorating about the salt air; it’s the perfect mixture of rotting seaweed, seagull excrement, and fresh air. It sounds no way palatable, but I am sure most island/coast dwellers can agree with me that it just brings you to the earliest memories of happiness.

I have been on the lookout for a classic biker jacket recently, and this Zara one just fitted the bill perfectly. It was even reasonably priced! The problem with me is that if I latch on to a style, I end up buying about 10 variations of the same item – a look through my closet would confirm my love for draped jackets and bodycon skirts, amongst other things. Now that the weather’s so bring and warm, I’m at a complete loss at how to work my autumn/winter heavy closet; this has spurred me on a journey to find said biker jacket (done!) and summer dresses (still needs beefing up in this department).

At least I have the shoes department covered with these spanking new Jeffrey Campbell Soirees! I know I’m about a year late to the trend, but it takes a long time for me to warm up to an item, especially a trendy item. I spend months mulling over a purchase, and when I finally decide to go for it, the fad would have passed. Ah well – at least I know that I really like them!

Outfit Post: Jardin Luxembourg

How has July been treating everyone? It has been a pretty exciting month for me so far, with a week long summer holiday (where I got plenty tanned) and the confirmation of my final results. I was elated to find out that I have been awarded a First Class Honours – it feels great to know that my three years of study have finally cumulated into something tangible! Graduation’s this week so hopefully I will have plenty of pictures to document the biggest moment of my life, yet. :D

These series of pictures were taken when I was with Arissa in Paris. Her presence reminded me of the dynamics we share, and just how hard it is to actually find someone you can get along so well with… Although we have not seen each other in almost a year, it felt like we picked up right where we left off. It can be awfully hard to maintain friendships over distance, but I am so glad she stuck with me through my (frequent) periods of absence. She’s seriously as solid as a rock.

Anyway, enough about life in general! Here is a series of pictures we took in Jardin Luxembourg. The boiling hot weather now has got me wishing for cooler temperatures again!

Graduation!

0

Breaking the monotony of outfit posts to bring you something a little more personal. Now that I’ve graduated, I’m officially a NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training)! It’s a rather depressing thought, but let’s ignore that for now and focus on the graduation ceremony! Being only 23 and leading a relatively uneventful life, I must say that this is my biggest moment yet – I bought the dress 2 months in advance only to have it go on 50% off a week before the ceremony. Typical!

My ceremony begins at 1000 as well, meaning that I got up at half six to get ready. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, I am not. Somehow managed to survive the incredibly hot tube journey and reached school with plenty of time to spare for once.

It honestly did not seem that long ago that I announced on Monoxious that I was leaving Singapore for school. And now that it’s finished, I am once again left without clear directions as to how life may go from now on. This uncertainty is stressful and I have not been coping with it too well, but it is part and parcel of growing up. It is comfortable having someone pave the way for you, but eventually you must learn to forge your own path…anyway, I am just incredibly glad to end my university years on a high note, with a first class honours and a Linguistics dissertation prize. I felt like I have finally accomplished something in life even if it isn’t much!

Major thanks to J who took a day off to be my personal paparazzi.

Z35B0208-Recovered

I wanted my skin to look glowy and flawless that day, so I reached for my SK-II foundation! Despite all the other foundations I have tried (and prefer wearing on a daily basis), SKI-II Cellumination seriously delivers an unbeatable coverage and glow. Graduation makeup should be kept classic (or natural, but natural makeup is not my forte), and I opted for the timeless combination of eyeliner and red lips.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in Paris… take pictures at Parisian windows, I suppose. How I would kill to have a massive window in my room!

vintage romance 2

One thing I miss about all my close friends is how we’d play with each other’s makeup. I have never bought OCC Lip Tars despite all the rave surrounding them, simply because I knew that I’d never use it with the bothersome application. So when Arissa was in Paris, I stuck my grubby fingers all over her stash and tried on this OCC Lip Tar in ‘Vintage’! It is a super saturated deep pink verging on red, and so, so flattering.

The colour payoff is every bit as awesome as everyone claims it is. I was hoping that it would dry down matte (much like Hourglass’s opaque rouge), but it remained just slightly tacky. I really couldn’t get behind the minty sensation though – it left me feeling as if I have forgotten to rinse my toothpaste out of my mouth. The colour payoff is every bit saturated as praised to be, though – so that might just be a small tradeoff. ;)

What are your thoughts on OCC lip tars?

Tutorial: Photoshop work flow

0
0

I’ve been getting a few questions as to how I edit my photographs, so I thought it was about time I post my typical photoshop workflow. Obviously the amount of editing that needs to be done varies from picture to picture, and a single picture can take anything between 10 minutes to a couple of hours. A close-up picture of the face typically takes the longest for me as I focus on removing blemishes and evening out the skintone.

The first thing to do is to identify the areas you want to rectify – in this picture, I need to correct the slightly underexposed lighting, amp up the contrast, and potentially do a little bit of sharpening. Personally I use Photoshop CS6, but these sort of correction can also be done in Lightroom, GIMP, or any other image editing softwares.

photoshop 1

Fortunately the combination of the lighting and the equipment has given me rather good skin, so nothing much needs to be corrected here. If you have blemishes or scars you want to remove, skip to the next step.

photoshop tutorial

I’m using a scar on my knee as an example of how I’d remove blemishes on my skin. I usually do not bother with this scar, but this is just for the purpose of this tutorial! Patch tool is my favourite for this occasion. Simply marquee the problem area and drag the selection into a blemish-free area.

photoshop tutorial 2

As you can tell, it is far from perfect. If you are fussed, you can go over this area with a clone stamp tool to make the texture more convincing. This can be a pretty time-consuming process if you are dealing with large areas of unevenness (i.e. my eyebags).

photoshop tutorial 3

If you feel that your picture could benefit from a bit of sharpening, I find that following this tutorial produces pretty good results.

photoshop tutorial 4

Now all that is left is for you to adjust the colour and brightness. I usually do everything through Curves – go into the individual colour channels to change the colour tone of the picture. Last thing left to do is to adjust the brightness/contrast, and you are done!

final

There are many things that goes behind the making of a fashion blog that I am sure you are curious about, so please feel free to ask us! x

The only good thing about moving is that you discover items you don’t remember buying in the dark recesses of your closet. It’s like finding loose change in your purse only on a much larger scale. Having to move constantly also really keeps my shopping in check, I’d like to think – you never realise just how much junk you have until you have to move them all. I honestly don’t know how I have managed to accumulate so much stuff in three years. Every time I move, I feel the compulsion to give my wardrobe a huge purge…but I never get around to doing it, of course. Seoul Bound

Arissa and I are embarking on our first journey together! We have met plenty of times overseas before, but this is our first time travelling together with one another. We are boarding a plane bound for Seoul in a few hours’ time – if you are wondering why we have been rather quiet about this rather momentous occasion, it is in part because I can hardly believe it myself that it is coming true. Remember how I joked about needing plastic surgery so I can save time on photoshopping my pictures? Well, we are heading to Seoul to get plastic surgery now.

We exchanged emails with the Banobagi representative Claire (who spoke perfect English) and decided on them as they are one of the top-notch plastic surgery clinics in Korea. If you have even remotely been on the internet in the past year, you would have heard of the famous Korean reality television series Let Me In. It is a show based around transforming women living with unusual body conditions, such as excessive lose skin stemming from weight loss to bimaxillary protrusion. It was through this show that we first heard of Banobagi; after witnessing their capabilities, we feel assured that we are in skilled hands!

While neither Arissa and I face such issues, there are naturally parts of our body that we felt needed improvements. Claire has been nothing but accommodating to our frequent questions and I am actually feeling very assured despite the enormity of our decision. Prior to departing, Claire even called us all the way from Korea to check on us. We are just incredibly impressed by the amount of hospitality Claire has shown us so far, and we really can’t wait to touch down in Seoul!

We will be posting frequent updates on the blog with details of our trip and naturally,  the surgical process. Anybody wants to venture a guess as to what procedures Arissa and I will be getting? ;)
